Liberty Mutual Insurance Company was formed on July 1, 1912, to market workers’ compensation. In 1918 Liberty Mutual started selling auto insurance. With Liberty Mutual’s emphasis on workers’ compensation the company in 1920 Liberty Mutual pioneered the use of the then-new medium of the silent screen to teach the importance of workplace safety. In 1932 Liberty Mutual Insurance Company built its first office building in Boston Massachusetts. Skipping ahead a few years in 1973 Liberty Mutual Insurance Company established its first operation in the United Kingdom. Today Liberty Mutual Insurance Company still has its headquarters in Boston Massachusetts while they operate in 30 countries.

In 1946 as innovators of safety Liberty Mutual pioneered escalator safety by helping to create an emergency stop switch. Then in 1957 Liberty Mutual Insurance Company partnered with Cornell to create a “safety car.” Along with safety Liberty Mutual Insurance Company has been concerned with helping humanity. In 1967 Liberty Mutual Insurance Company worked to help the disabled by creating the first powered prosthetic elbow. Liberty Mutual Insurance Company continued to grow in the 1990’s. The way Liberty Mutual Insurance Company continued to grow was through acquisitions of major commercial and risk carriers. Then in 2008 Liberty Mutual made the largest of all their acquisitions of insurance companies in by acquiring Safeco Insurance Company out of Seattle Washington. Liberty Mutual continues to be innovative and future driven. In 2016. In 2016 Liberty Mutual created Solaria Labs. Solaria Labs is known as “A global team that explores how trends will shape the future and develops new products to protect our customers in a rapidly changing world.”
